Arctic Norway - Arctic Norway Sørøya or Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya Expedition - 13 days
Sørøya is Norway's fourth-largest island, covering an area of 811 square kilometers (313 sq mi). It is divided between Hasvik Municipality and Hammerfest Municipality. Often hailed as one of Norway's most beautiful islands, Sørøya boasts a population of around 1,100 as of 2018.
The island is characterized by its rocky, mountainous terrain, with its highest peak, Komagaksla, reaching 659 meters (2,162 ft) above sea level on the southern shore. Its coastline is rugged and indented with numerous fjords that penetrate inland from the open ocean. Sørøya is bordered by the Norwegian Sea to the north and the Sørøysundet strait to the south. Across the Sørøysundet lie three larger islands: Stjernøya, Seiland, and Kvaløya. Access to Sørøya is primarily by ferry, with regular routes connecting the village of Hasvik to Øksfjord on the mainland.
Settlements on Sørøya are predominantly found along the southwestern shore in Hasvik, with scattered settlements in other areas. The northeastern part, under Hammerfest Municipality, also has some settlements, although the road infrastructure is not fully interconnected.
If conditions are not favourable for Sørøya we may look to visit the more sheltered and breathtakingly beautiful Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya Protected Landscape.
For this expedition we will be using Hurtigruten Ferries for transportation from Tromso.
Up to 7 moderate or advanced water sea kayakers will be invited on this expedition. Two highly experienced coaches (and potentially an assistant) will support the team on the expedition. The coaches will help the team to collect environmental information for good decision making by the group on their journey.
Pre-expedition training
The team will be encouraged to meet on Anglesey for a weekend in February 2025, to get to know each other and plan how everyone wants the expedition to proceed. Collaborative expedition meal arrangements could also be planned/organised.
