Explorer Sea Kayaking Course

Exploring the sea, exploring our skills and being out there together…exploring the tides and rivers, straits and estuaries of Anglesey…. the marine biology to be found around its coastline, some of which we can only get to in sea kayaks…
— Sarah Horton - regular Explorer Course member and Anglesey Circumnvavigator

Are you new to sea kayaking or someone who enjoys smooth sea kayak journeys of up to 15km.

This is a level 2 course, aimed at paddlers who want to journey along open coastlines in condition from sheltered up to very low moderate water level.

Please note this is not a course for beginners.

Paddlers on this course bring a basic understanding of sea kayak (or river/white water) boat handling skills, that they want to apply and develop on fairly exposed coastline journeys. These journeys provide entertainment for a wide range of sea kayaker.

Swell and current often interact with the shoreline to give challenges that the more adventurous participants may play and hone their skills in. There will always be alternative easier lines to take. Essentially, we aim to choose journeys where our participants can modulate their own levels of exciting or cruisey lines, as we all explore the coastline.

British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award - work through SKW’s handy checklist. We are unlikely to be able to complete the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award award on this course, as we may be too busy playing and journeying, to complete the syllabus. Should you wish to complete this award please book onto a bespoke sea kayaking day with one of our coaching team.
