Solving the 2027 Leadership Challenge: Community Solutions for UK Sea Kayaking Clubs

The UK's Rich Community of Sea Kayaking Clubs

We are so fortunate to have such a vibrant club scene nurturing and supporting the sea kayaking community. As a coaching provider, I'm very aware of how much I rely on clubs to welcome the new paddlers I signpost to them. I'm also thankful of the role clubs played in my own development – thank you Colwyn Bay and Snowdonia Canoe Clubs! 2026 poses a big challenge to sea kayaking clubs and we can all help each other through this transition.

The Problem: A 2027 Deadline

By the end of 2026, all Paddle UK/Cymru/Scotland/Northern Ireland affiliated clubs will need to have appropriately qualified leaders and coaches in place to run activities. For sea kayaking clubs in particular, this can mean moving from club "signed off" leaders to BCAB-qualified leaders.

The reality is stark: getting all the qualified people in place by the deadline requires personal commitment, financial investment, and access to clear pathways. For clubs without existing infrastructure or established leader networks, it feels overwhelming.

Clubs across the UK are facing the same question: how do we get our people qualified in time?

Why This Deadline Exists: Insurance and Liability

Paddle UK’s Standards for Deployment policy sets out that by December 2026, instructors, leaders, and coaches operating under Paddle UK/British Canoeing frameworks are expected to hold a BCAB qualification appropriate to their role and environment.

Why it matters:

  • Insurance (within the Paddle UK/BCAB system) – Meeting the qualification requirement helps ensure coaches and leaders are covered under the relevant Paddle UK/BCAB insurance arrangements. If a club chooses not to comply, it may lose access to that specific cover and may also face limits around affiliation and recognised activity.

  • Liability and governance – If an incident occurs, clubs may be asked to evidence that they followed the expected standards, qualifications, and decision-making for their chosen operating framework. Falling outside Paddle UK/BCAB expectations can increase scrutiny and personal/club exposure.

Some Clubs Are Already There

It's worth saying: many bigger, more established, and/or more specialised clubs have been tackling this internally for years – building their own leadership pipelines, mentoring systems, and training plans.

But for lots of other clubs, that approach simply isn't realistic. If you don't have the depth of experienced leaders, the budget, or the volume of paddlers coming through, then solving this alone can be unrealistic.

That's where a more cooperative approach becomes not just helpful, but necessary.

The Solution: Working Together

The answer lies in community. When clubs work together, share expertise, and pool resources, the challenge becomes manageable.

That's why we're bringing clubs together to develop realistic, timely pathways to leadership qualifications. The focus is clear: help club leaders prepare for British Canoeing Award (BCAB) leadership assessments through community-led ideas and training initiatives.

By collaborating, clubs can:

  • Share the cost of training and assessment

  • Access experienced coaches and mentors

  • Build confidence and competence together

  • Meet the 2026 deadline without burnout

The North West Clubs Sea Kayaking Development Weekend (Open to All UK Clubs): A Step Forward

On 14–15 March 2026, we're hosting the NW Clubs Sea Kayaking Development Weekend at Sea Kayaking Wales Centre in Holyhead, Anglesey. It's designed specifically for clubs that want to develop sea kayaking opportunities for their members – and need support to get their leaders qualified.  Booking link

The weekend is organised by Tim Hogan, a highly experienced outdoor coach and expedition leader with over 40 years in the industry. Tim brings a wealth of expertise in mountaineering and paddlesports coaching, along with a background in leadership and risk management. Crucially, he's a recently retired chairperson of Clitheroe Canoe Club – so he understands the real challenges clubs face when managing leaders and qualifications.

Priority for this event is given to North West clubs, but here's the good news: for the 6 weeks leading up to the event, spaces are available for all UK clubs to book. If you're based anywhere in the UK and want to join, now's the time to secure your place.

The weekend brings together:

  • Potential and existing sea leaders wanting to develop their skills

  • Club officials and members exploring how to build sea kayaking into their club's offering

  • Top coaches and National Trainers sharing knowledge and expertise

  • A practical, supportive environment where clubs can learn, network, and plan

Participants will spend time on the water learning from experienced coaches, attend dry workshops on safety, planning, and leadership, and – crucially – leave with a clear understanding of what's involved in achieving sea kayak leadership qualifications.

The cost? Just £70 per head, thanks to Paddle UK regional funding that's been ring-fenced to support exactly this kind of initiative.

Beyond March: Scaling the Solution

The NW Clubs weekend is a starting point, not an endpoint. The real goal is to spark further initiatives that reach clubs across the UK – not just in the North West.

When clubs see what's possible through collaboration, when they understand the pathways and have access to quality coaching and support, the 2027 deadline becomes achievable. And when clubs are confident in their leaders, the whole sport benefits.

The North West Clubs Sea Kayaking Development Group and Sea Kayaking Wales propose to arrange lots of subsidised sea kayak leader development and assessment opportunities throughout 2026. Priority will again go to North West clubs, but spare places will be opened out (in the last 6 weeks or so) to all UK clubs. This will ensure no spaces go to waste and help all UK clubs become compliant.
