Arctic Norway Tromsø Expedition: 9-Day Sea Kayaking Adventure (Kvaløya, Sommarøy, Håja & Vengsøya Islands)

Formerly known as the Senja and Kvaløya Expedition, this adventure now focuses on the very best of Arctic Norway’s Tromsø coast—carefully selected for intermediate expedition paddlers seeking a world-class experience.

Explore the stunning Arctic coastline of Norway on this intermediate-level (Level 3) sea kayaking expedition through Kvaløya, Sommarøy, Håja, and Vengsøya Islands.

Located just north and west of Tromsø, this region offers a spectacular mix of rugged mountains, white-sand beaches, and crystal-clear fjords—all illuminated by the midnight sun.

Why Paddle Here?

This expedition is perfect for paddlers with solid intermediate skills who are comfortable in up to moderate water conditions and eager to push their experience further. The route combines exposed crossings with sheltered bays, offering both challenge and reward. Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to spot Arctic wildlife—including seals, porpoises, sea eagles, and even whales.

A true highlight is Håja Island—a dramatic, steep-sided peak rising sharply from the sea, often compared to a miniature version of Norway’s iconic Segla. Håja has become a favourite on recent SKW expeditions for its wild beauty, unique birdlife, and sense of remoteness. Landing on or paddling around Håja is always a memorable moment, with panoramic views and a real sense of Arctic adventure.

Wildlife Encounters on the Expedition

The coastal waters and wild islands of Kvaløya, Sommarøy, Håja, and Vengsøya are a haven for Arctic wildlife. As you paddle through this stunning landscape, keep your eyes peeled for some unforgettable encounters—both above and below the waterline.

  • Seabird Colonies:

    • Håja is a standout, with its dramatic cliffs hosting thousands of nesting seabirds—puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, and guillemots.

    • Vengsøya supports significant seabird populations along its remote, rugged coastline.

    • The Sommarøy archipelago and its islets are alive with Arctic terns, eiders, oystercatchers, and ringed plovers during nesting season. Some islets are protected, so landings may be restricted—best viewed from your sea kayak.

    • Kvaløya’s outer cliffs and skerries attract smaller colonies, especially in less developed areas.

  • Sea Eagles (White-Tailed Eagles):

    • Frequently seen soaring over Håja, Vengsøya, and the Sommarøy islets. Look for their broad wings and characteristic white tails as they patrol the coastline, hunt for fish, or perch on rocky outcrops.

  • Marine Mammals:

    • Seals (harbour and grey) are commonly spotted hauled out on rocks or curiously swimming near your kayak.

    • Harbour porpoises are often seen in calm bays and headlands.

    • Whales (especially minke whales, and occasionally orcas) may be encountered in deeper channels, particularly during the summer feeding season.

    • Otters can be seen along sheltered shores and kelp forests, most often in the quiet hours of morning or evening.

  • Other Birds & Wildlife:

    • Waders and shorebirds such as oystercatchers, curlews, and sandpipers are abundant along beaches and mudflats.

    • Waterfowl including eiders and mergansers frequent sheltered bays.

    • On Kvaløya, you might spot reindeer grazing, and with luck, glimpse mountain hares or even the elusive Arctic fox on the most remote islets.

    • Raptors such as peregrine falcons and kestrels also hunt in the area.

Tips for Wildlife Watching:

  • Early mornings and late evenings are often best for sightings.

  • Use binoculars for a closer look, and keep a respectful distance, especially around nesting birds and marine mammals.

  • Always observe local guidelines regarding landings and wildlife protection.
