6 across: 'Hot bricks made here'.... Porth Wen Porth Wen Brickworks was a Victorian brick factory that produced fire bricks made from quartzite (silica). These bricks were capable of withstanding a higher temperature than usual red house bricks and were mostly needed for the steel industry, to line steel-making furnaces and kilns.
8 down: 'No passage landward'....Penmon Important statement written on Trwyn Du Lighthouse, also known as Penmon Lighthouse
5 down: 'She could have lured paddlers to destruction by the sweetness of her song' …. South Stack The cover of the Roxy Music album, 'Siren' features band member Bryan Ferry's then-girlfriend, model Jerry Hall, on rocks near South Stack, Anglesey. Graham Hughes, working during August 1975, took the cover photo directly below the central span of the bridge on a south-side slope. In Greek mythology, the Sirens were dangerous creatures half bird half woman, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.
3 down: 'Coming here might have been a habit':.... 'Llanlleiana' The name Llanlleiana appears to denote a connection with nuns (lleian is Welsh for nun). It was written as Llanliane in 1535 and Llanlliana c.1840. However, there is no record of a nunnery or convent here, and we should keep an open mind about the origin of the place-name. Nuns wear a 'habit'. It may even have been workers clothes, white from porcelain dust?
5 across: 'A 'fair' Saint and an island'.... Seiriol Seiriol was an early 6th-century saint, who created a cell at Penmon Priory. He later moved to Ynys Seiriol (Puffin Island). According to legend, he and Saint Cybi were good friends, and would meet weekly near Llanerchymedd, at the Clorach wells. Saint Cybi would walk from Holyhead, facing the rising sun in the morning and setting sun in the evening. Saint Cybi was known as Cybi Felyn (Cybi the Tanned), as he was tanned during his journey. Seiriol, travelling in the opposite direction, from Penmon, would have his back to the sun. Thus, he was known as Seiriol Wyn (Seiriol the Fair).
9 across: 'A boat full of witches landed here'...Llandonna A boat full of witches and their husbands landed at Llandonna many centuries ago, according to legend. The boat had been cast adrift in a foreign country, possibly Ireland, without oars, a sail or a rudder. The occupants were desperate for food and water when their boat grounded here, and at their command a spring of freshwater suddenly appeared.
2 across: 'The Moor of The Column'...Rhoscolyn The name Rhoscolyn is said to mean "The Moor" (Rhos) of The Column (colyn), referring to a pillar which the Romans put up to mark the edge of their territories..
7 across: 'Drawing of a Landrover' …..Red Wharf Bay In 1947 mechanical engineer Maurice Wilks made the first ever drawing of a Land Rover on the beach here, to explain to his brother his concept of an all-terrain vehicle. The Land Rover Defender was one of the most successful road vehicles in history – more than two million were made before production ceased in January 2016.
4 across: 'Stop 'knocking'.....Amlwch The Associated Octel factory at Amlwch was built to extract bromine from seawater and turn it into an additive for petrol engines. At the time, petrol used in road vehicles contained lead. Engine “knocking” was a common problem, when the mixture of air and fuel didn’t burn efficiently with each detonation. This could damage engine cylinders over time. The additive produced here reduced knocking and improved engine efficiency.
1 down: 'A new boat near the site of a Royal wreck'....Moelfre The Royal Charter was a steam clipper which was wrecked off the beach of Porth Alerth in Dulas Bay near Moelfre on 26 October 1859. New Tamar Class lifeboat and Station designed for the boat to fit was built at Moelfre and operational in March 2015.
