Skye & Hebrides, Scotland Expedition

This year’s big SKW Scotland Expedition will be aiming to get out to the Outer Hebrides to explore Harris and potentially Lewis, Shiants Isles, etc.

We will meet on the Saturday in Skye to formulate a plan. If the weather is favourable, everyone will park up their cars on the Sunday in Uig and travel as foot passengers (with kayaks on trolleys) to Tarbert. The west facing coast has wonderful beaches and great islands to explore, e.g. Taransay and Scarp. The east coast is more sheltered and is an intricate coastline with numerous islands and lochs. The Minch Islands of the Shiants are truly amazing to visit. And the Rhenigidale Youth Hostel is well worth a visit for a hot shower and comfy bed.

Our bad weather (on the Outer Hebrides) plan B option is to explore Skye on expedition. As plan B options go Skye is not a bad one!

The weather and tides will very much shape our expedition journey’s route. There are are extensive sheltered journey options, meaning that any adverse environmental conditions will mostly not interfere with a great expedition experience.

Our aim will be to provide an enjoyable wilderness sea kayaking expedition in an area of tidal currents, superb wildlife and interesting historical sites.

To benefit fully from this experience, participants should be comfortable paddling a loaded kayak, for up to 5 hours per day and be happy setting up wild camps, with their fantastic team mates.

The expedition will be self-sufficient and you will be wild camping throughout the journey, with the odd bit of fishing and wildlife spotting including: dolphins and otters along the way.

Whilst we cannot control the weather we’ll make the very best of whatever is thrown at us.
