Left-right – Geth, Paul, Steve, Ed, Richard
Our team members don’t just bring highly competent paddling skills and a range of high level qualifications to SKW. They are perhaps more notable for being very personable and enthusiastic proponents of excellent client experience through kayak play, humour and exploration.
The SKW team have amassed many decades of teaching experience in both the classroom and outdoor education environments. Their combined love of learning and exploration is now largely focussed on the maritime and wild terrestrial environments.
- Geth Roberts, PhD, PGCE and UKCC Level 3 Advanced Water Sea Kayak Coach, Moderate Water Inland Kayak Coach, ML (summer), SPA
Geth is SKW’s Mission Director. His formative adventurous years revolved around journeying and climbing in the mountains. A childhood fueled with BBC nature programmes in the very rural West Wales inspired a lifelong interest in Biological Sciences. This resulted in Geth studying Biochemistry at Bangor followed by doctoral and post-doctoral work in Plant Growth and Development at the John Innes Centre, Norwich.
On returning to North Wales, to assume a career in teaching, Geth spent much of his free time sea/river kayaking and leading youth expeditions. Meanwhile, his scientific interests became targeted to Marine Biology, which he explores on the surface and coast by kayak and underwater by scuba.
- Kirsty Roberts, BA (Languages), PGCE, UKCC Level 1 Coach, ML (summer)
Kirsty has been exploring the mountains of the UK and European Alps since she could walk. This love of the hills and European travels brought Kirsty to Bangor University to study French, German and Spanish. This was followed by teacher training and lots of work as a supply teacher in primary schools. She has lived in North Wales ever since graduation.
Kirsty has paddled on the sea and in rivers extensively in Europe and led youth expedition groups in SE Asia, North Africa and Central America. As SKW’s Mission Controller she supports our frontline coaching from the office and her van whilst looking after the new Roberts family members.
Paul and Richard
- Paul Williams, BSc (Sports Science), PGCE, BCU Level 3 Coach and Advanced Sea Kayak Leader, ML (summer)
Paul has lived in North Wales his entire life and used to be Head of Physical and Outdoor Education at Coleg Menai. He is now SKW’s Head Coach and expert in sports coaching and leadership.
Paul brings a calm and thoughtful ethos to SKW’s coaching. He is a practitioner of mindfulness and has a wealth of local cultural/historical knowledge. In a previous life Paul rode motorcycles for adrenalin and represented Wales in Karate competitions. After a great day paddling Paul loves to enjoy: live music, nice restaurants and fine whiskey.
- Richard Janes, BSc, PGCE, BCU Advanced Sea Kayak Leader
Richard is SKW’s Creative Director. He loves to reconnaissance new coastal venues for their great sea kayaking journeys and hospitality. Following an inspiring guided kayaking holiday, in British Columbia, Canada, Richard returned to SKW to help design our Marine Biodiversity guided kayaking products. This also utilised his expertise as a former Head of Chemistry school teacher.
Richard also has a talent with words to capture experiences, often seafaring-related, in evocative poems. After a few whiskeys (usually with Paul) Richard plays the guitar a bit like Mark Knopfler!
- Ed Loffill, PhD (Civil Engineering), BCU Advanced Sea Kayak Leader, ML (summer)
Ed is a highly skilled kayaker who is great to paddle with, safe in the knowledge that he is watching your back. He specialises in sea kayaking in very rough water and surfs tiderace waves with elan. This enthusiasm for technically challenging water keeps the team on our toes and paddling at our best.
Ed’s relaxed paddling style is ideal for expedition camping journeys. He has enjoyed some awesome multi-day sea kayak trips in Scotland and Ireland, which he captures beautifully on both video and in photographs.
- Steve Miles, UKCC Level 2 Advanced Water Coach, ML(summer), SPA
Steve is an advanced guide and trainer for ISKGA (international sea kayaking guide association). He is passionate about sharing dynamic coastal environments with clients. Expertise earned in both coasteering and extreme sea kayaking has made him one of the best coaches in delivering incident management courses.
Steve has completed some fantastic kayak expeditions circumnavigating: Wales, Ireland, The Roof of Scotland and journeying above the Arctic Circle in Nordkapp, Norway and Greenland.
