SKW Away Trip
From: Level 3 (Intermediate)
6th to 13th of September 2025 (#ShePaddles)
16th to 21st of September - t.b.c 2025 (Mixed Gender)
6 Days Paddling
Kayaking on Krk, the largest island in Croatia, offers a unique blend of stunning coastal scenery and tranquil waters. Paddling along the shoreline, kayakers can explore hidden coves, clear blue lagoons, and rocky cliffs, with the opportunity to encounter diverse marine life and lush vegetation.
The KRK's mild Mediterranean climate makes it ideal for kayaking from spring to autumn, while its varied coastline provides routes suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. The charming beach towns along the way, such as Vrbnik and Baška, enhance the experience, inviting kayakers to pause and enjoy local cuisine and culture.
Please get in touch if you have any questions about the trip that haven’t been answered below. :-)

The Island of Krk is the largest island in Croatia. It has a great variety of beaches, lush green vegetation and clear waters. It is also an easy place to launch kayaks for exploring. The island is situated in the northern end of Adriatic, and is one of five islands in Kvarner Gulf. The island is roughly 45km long and 20km wide.
During the 5/6 Paddling Days you will experience paddling along steep shorelines and make crossings to explore other islands.
Plans are made so they can be changed…
Each day’s paddling destinations and routes will chosen based on the group's skill level, strength, and the weather.
Day 0.
We arrive at our base for the week and enjoy some time exploring the local area on foot.
Day 1.
As this will be the first day after a travelling, it will be nice and slow.
We will be paddling in the immediate area in the direction of the amazing medieval town, Vrbnik.
There will be shorter and longer day options, depending on the group’s enthusiasm and energy levels.
Day 2-6
Our launching venues will be situated across KRK. Whilst there will be lots of time spent on the water, there will also be several breaks as well as the opportunity to explore places on foot.
The paddling plans for the week will include; the little islands to the south of Krk, including the steep, rocky beauty of Prvic, the mountainous eastern coastline of Krk, and Tito’s formidable prison island for political prisoners, Sveri Grgur.
On Tito’s Prison Island there will be the chance to visit the semi-tame deer living on the island and tour the prison compounds now open to the public (open, quite literally, as most of the roofs are missing).
We also hope to visit Vrbnik, a stunning medieval town, paddle along the gorgeous rocks and under the gaze of giant vultures of Prvic and kayak to the Kosljun monastery on a tiny island near Punat.
These are just some of the places we hope to explore.
Should you choose to have a non-paddling day, you might choose to explore:
The town of Krk,
The Franciscan Monastery on the tiny island of Kosljun,
The amazing Vrbnik,
Or take a ferry ride to the Island of Rab with its sandy beaches.
-
We will be based out of Silo, Krk and can recommend the following apartments:
https://apartments-villa-bernarda.com/accommodation/
or
https://pansion-riviera-silo.com/silo-apartments/
These apartments are about a 3 minute walk from each other.
Silo is a picturesque but simple seaside town on the protected, east side of the island.
-
You need to have a good fitness level and be happy kayaking for 4 to 5 hours with breaks.
Skills wise: Level 3 - You will be journeying in upto moderate water conditions (see environmental definitions below) and is often pitched at fairly experienced sea kayakers who enjoy journeying and aspirant BC Sea Kayak Award holders. Participants should have a reasonable understanding of forward paddling and boat handling techniques, with a view to applying them to some moderate water conditions.
Moderate Water
Definition
Sea: A stretch of coastline with some areas where it is not easy to land but there will always be straight forward land points a maximum of two nautical miles apart. Crossings not exceeding two nautical miles. Wind strengths do not exceed Beaufort force 4. Launching and landing through surf (up to 1 metre, trough to crest height).
If you’re not quite sure if you’d be suitable for the trip, please get in touch. :-)
